This does not mean that every desktop hard drive will immediately fail in a CCTV recorder. The point is that a surveillance HDD is engineered around the type of workload the recorder is expected to perform.

How Much CCTV Storage Do You Need?

Drive capacity alone does not tell you how many days of footage you will retain. Recording time depends on several factors:

  • number of cameras;
  • camera resolution;
  • frame rate;
  • video codec such as H.265/H.265+ or H.264;
