How Many CCTV Cameras Do I Need? UK Home Camera Placement Guide

There is no single correct number of CCTV cameras for every home. A small terraced property may need only a few well-positioned cameras, while a detached house with side access, a long driveway, a garage and several outbuildings can need considerably more.

The useful question is not “How many cameras can I install?” but “How many distinct approach and access zones do I need to identify clearly?”

Start with zones, not camera count

Walk around the outside of the property and list the areas that matter most:

  • front door and main approach;
  • driveway and parked vehicles;
  • side gate or passage;
  • rear door and patio;
  • rear garden access;
  • garage, shed or other outbuilding;
  • any blind approach that cannot be seen from another camera.

One camera may cover more than one zone if the viewing angle is suitable. Equally, a large or awkward zone can require two cameras if one wide view would make faces or number plates too small to be useful.

Typical starting points by UK property type

These are planning ranges, not fixed rules.

Terraced house: often 2–3 cameras

A front camera and rear camera may cover the main approaches. A third can be useful for an alley, parking area or separate rear access.

Semi-detached house: often 3–5 cameras

Side access creates another approach route. A typical design covers the front, rear, side gate/passage and driveway, with an additional camera where one angle cannot identify both people and vehicles clearly.

Detached house: often 4–8+ cameras

Detached properties vary too much for a fixed number. Separate sides, multiple entrances, garages, long drives and outbuildings can all add camera zones. For larger systems, a wired PoE CCTV camera network connected to an NVR is often easier to manage systematically than relying on several independent wireless links.

Front door and main approach

The front entrance is usually the highest-priority identification zone. Position the camera so a visitor's face occupies a useful part of the image instead of using an extremely wide view that shows the whole street but very little facial detail.

Mounting height is a compromise: high enough to reduce easy tampering, but not so high that the camera mostly records the tops of heads. The exact height and angle depend on the lens, distance and entrance layout.

Driveways and vehicles

A driveway camera should be planned around the evidence you actually need. A broad overview can show movement and vehicle type, but reading a number plate reliably is a different task that depends on distance, angle, shutter settings, lighting and camera capability.

If the driveway is long or turns around a corner, one camera may not provide both an overview and useful identification at every point.

Side gates and passages

Side access is easy to overlook because it is narrow and often poorly lit. A dedicated camera can be more useful than trying to cover the passage from a distant front or rear camera.

For narrow corridors, lens choice and mounting angle matter. More megapixels do not automatically solve a poor field of view.

Rear garden and back door

The rear of a property can have several distinct zones: back door, patio, boundary gate and outbuildings. A single wide camera may be enough for a small garden; a larger garden may need one camera for the house approach and another for the far boundary or garage.

Garages, sheds and outbuildings

If an outbuilding contains tools, bicycles or other valuable equipment, consider whether the camera should watch the building itself, the route approaching it, or both. If the structure is far from the house, cable distance and network design can become as important as camera choice.

How much area does one CCTV camera cover?

There is no trustworthy answer in square metres without knowing the lens, sensor, mounting height, camera position and the level of detail required.

A wide-angle camera can see a large area, but objects in that area appear smaller. A narrower field of view sees less area but can place more pixels on a face or vehicle at the same resolution. CCTV planning should therefore distinguish between:

  • detection: noticing that something is present;
  • observation: seeing useful activity and characteristics;
  • identification: capturing enough detail to recognise a person or other target.

This is why “one camera covers the whole garden” is not the same as “one camera provides useful evidence everywhere in the garden.”

Avoid blind spots, but do not create unnecessary overlap

Some overlap is useful around high-risk entrances because another camera can record an approach if one view is blocked or tampered with. Covering every square metre twice, however, can waste recorder channels and storage.

Prioritise approach routes and identification points first, then add overview coverage where it provides a real benefit.

Plan the NVR before buying the cameras

If you expect to install six cameras, buying a recorder with no spare capacity can make the next expansion unnecessarily expensive. Consider a sensible number of spare channels, but also check:

  • supported camera resolution and protocols;
  • incoming bandwidth;
  • built-in PoE port count and PoE power budget;
  • hard-drive bay count and supported storage;
  • display and remote-viewing requirements.

More cameras also means more storage

Every additional camera adds recording data. Retention time depends on camera count, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec and whether the system records continuously or only on configured events.

Remember privacy when positioning domestic CCTV

Try to position cameras so they capture what is necessary for protecting the property. If domestic CCTV records beyond your boundary, such as a neighbour's property or public space, additional UK data-protection responsibilities can apply. Avoid unnecessarily intrusive angles and use privacy masking where appropriate and supported.

  1. Mark every external entrance and approach route.
  2. Decide where you need identification rather than just an overview.
  3. Check whether one angle genuinely covers more than one zone.
  4. Consider night-time lighting at each final camera position.
  5. Plan Ethernet routes and PoE power before mounting cameras.
  6. Choose an NVR with appropriate channels, bandwidth and storage capacity.
  7. Leave sensible expansion capacity if more cameras are likely later.

Frequently asked questions

Are four CCTV cameras enough for a house?

Four cameras can be a good starting point for many semi-detached and smaller detached homes if they cover the front, rear, side access and driveway effectively. Layout matters more than the number alone.

Do I need a camera on every side of the house?

Not automatically. Cover routes that someone can realistically use to approach doors, windows, gates, vehicles or outbuildings. A side wall with no access may not need a dedicated camera.

Is an 8-channel NVR enough for six cameras?

Potentially, yes, if the recorder supports the camera resolution, total incoming bandwidth and required features. It would also leave two channels for future expansion.

Should I use Wi-Fi or PoE cameras for a multi-camera home system?

Quality of coverage matters more than quantity

A well-planned four-camera system can be more useful than eight badly positioned cameras. Start with the areas where identification matters, design the network and recorder around those zones, then add cameras only where they remove a genuine blind spot or improve evidence quality.
